Incorporating media into the sports economics curriculum

Jadrian Wooten

Chapter 9 in Teaching Sports Economics and Using Sports to Teach Economics, 2022, pp 165-179 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Economists have explored the use of pop culture to teach a variety of different courses and concepts over the past few decades. As hosting costs have decreased and streaming services have become more prevalent, the ease in which educators can integrate media into the classroom has increased significantly. Pop culture sources that contain sports economics content include hit television shows like The Big Bang Theory, documentary series like ESPN's 30 for 30, trade books like Freakonomics, and podcast episodes on EconTalk. This chapter not only outlines ways that media can be integrated into assessments and lectures, but also identifies a variety of resources that have already been developed and made available online.
