Integrating the online teaching of qualitative analysis methods and technologies: challenges, solutions and opportunities

Christina Silver, Sarah L. Bulloch, Michelle Salmona and Nicholas W. Woolf

Chapter 22 in Handbook of Teaching and Learning Social Research Methods, 2023, pp 316-331 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter discusses how the teaching of qualitative analysis methods and technologies can be effectively taught in an integrated way in online contexts. The focus is on digital tools that have been specifically designed to facilitate qualitative data analysis (QDA), collectively known as Computer Assisted Qualitative Data AnalysiS (CAQDAS)-packages. Framed by the “whether, when and how” debate, the authors begin by discussing the appropriateness of the integrated teaching and learning of qualitative methods and CAQDAS-packages and the challenges of doing so. They introduce a typology of three models for integration, providing examples of each, using a range of qualitative methods, CAQDAS-packages and instructional designs. Using a CAQDAS pedagogy that transcends methods, software and instructional designs to frame our discussion - the Five-Level QDA method - they illustrate the adaptability of each model and discuss how they offer opportunities to overcome the challenges of integration.
