Chapter 10 in The Elgar Companion to Creating a Regenerative Economy for Wellbeing, 2026, pp 224-257 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This final chapter synthesises the book's central themes into a call for systemic transformation of the economy. It argues that tackling ecological breakdown and inequality requires rethinking goals and power structures of economic systems – a fundamental paradigm shift. Drawing on leverage points and the concept of ‘transformation literacy’ the chapter advocates for a shift from extractive, growth-driven logics towards inclusive, regenerative, and values-based governance in the economic realm. It critiques current institutions for being locked into short-termism, technocratic reasoning, and capital concentration, in order to urge a collective reimagining of what economies are for. The chapter articulates a vision for long-term change. It aims at bringing together the book's ecological facts, and institutional critiques, offering a framework to think about how deep change can happen. The ‘transformation literacy’ is the basis for the change urgently needed and much more than a policy shift. A transformative vision for 2035 is therefore outlined.
