Health effects of trade policy and corporate interest groups

Pepita Barlow

Chapter 17 in Handbook on the Political Economy of Health Systems, 2023, pp 270-291 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter looks at the political economy of trade-policies, and the role that they exerted on the health of the population. The chapter then discusses what are the cases where there has been a positive or a negative influence and explores the relationship between globalization and global health systems. The structure of the chapter starts with discussing contemporary global trade features, moves into an exploration of the evidence showing how institutions, trade agreements and policies impact on health systems, and finally looks at the political economy of health systems involved by trade policies.
