Intra-household experiments*
Alistair Munro
Chapter 8 in Handbook of Experimental Development Economics, 2025, pp 136-166 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Since the turn of the century, ‘lab-in-the-field’ and ‘sandbox’ style experiments have been conducted by development economists, changing our understanding of how households make decisions. This survey chapter, prepared for the Handbook of Experimental Development Economics, provides an overview of the state of knowledge. Both cooperative and non-cooperative conceptualizations of the household are inaccurate and unable to explain much of the data. Rather, a behavioural approach is required, especially one that emphasizes the central role of a demand for autonomy.
