Introduction to the Handbook of African Economic Development

Pádraig Carmody and James T. Murphy

Chapter 1 in Handbook of African Economic Development, 2024, pp 2-13 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Africa is often written about in both the popular/Western/global media and in many academic writings as the stand-out example of economic failure around the world. However this type of totalizing meta-narrative fails to do justice to the complexity, diversity and different experiences of countries, social groups, projects, and regions on the continent. This introductory chapter explores African economic development beyond popular tropes to begin to explore the diversity of experiences. It examines the global meta-trends shaping the continent’s economic development, such as urbanisation, financialisaton and climate change. It then moves to explore Africa’s “poverty challenge” and concludes by introducing the Handbook.
