Chapter 2 in Handbook of African Economic Development, 2024, pp 14-29 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Africa is often held up in the media and in much academic scholarship as a site of development failure. However in recent decades there has also been a competing counter-narrative around “Africa Rising” which waxes and wanes depending on the stage of the commodity and global economic cycles, amongst other factors. Both discourses are conducted at a high, and highly inaccurate, level. They overgeneralize based on limited evidence or perceptions as the reality of African economic development is highly diverse and geographically differentiated. This chapter examines different theories of (African) economic development and reviews debates about their applicability, veracity and replicability.
