Pastoral livelihoods in Africa

Abstract: The goal of this chapter is to discuss pastoralism in Africa. I begin with an examination of how academic research has contributed to our understanding of pastoralism and change. This includes research coming out of climate adaptation, past and current debates about overgrazing, as well as the more recent recognition of the relevance of pastoralists cultural heritage. The chapter goes on to highlight cross cutting themes in pastoral livelihoods in Africa. These include the pros and cons of livelihood diversification, the role and complexity of conflict on livelihoods, and how women’s important contributions to pastoral livelihoods can be enhanced. The chapter wraps up with a look at future trends in pastoralism.
