Healthy communities are sustainable communities: the North American perspective
Paivi Abernethy
Chapter Chapter 4 in The Intersection of Global Health and Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 49-62 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Healthy and sustainable communities are resilient communities. They play a critical role in bolstering people’s ability to cope with external stressors- be it economic downturns, climate emergencies, or pandemics. That is why it is critical for us to understand the complex network of causal pathways, interactions, and feedback loops that together create a healthy and sustainable community. We also need a better understanding of the mechanisms that help strengthen existing community assets to improve community resiliency. This chapter starts with a brief introduction to the historical evolution of the concepts in North America, followed by examples of some useful practices from Canadian and American community development practice, such as asset-based community development. The chapter ends with a discussion about the importance of integrating health and sustainability discourses when dealing with today’s multifaceted challenges.
