Globalization and economies

Ted Schrecker

Chapter Chapter 9 in The Intersection of Global Health and Sustainable Development, 2025, pp 129-149 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Although multiple definitions of globalization exist, and a few of these are canvassed, the chapter argues for viewing it as primarily an economic process, albeit driven by political choices. After mapping key pathways between globalization and health outcomes, the chapter examines selected sets of issues: debt crisis and the ‘structural adjustment’ programmes promoted by international financial institutions; trade law and policy, the global reorganization of production, and the constriction of national policy space; and globalization’s contribution to rising inequality. It then identifies three challenges for the future: pandemic preparedness in the aftermath of Covid-19; the renewed salience of geopolitics; and global environmental change as the world enters the Anthropocene Epoch. Global health researchers will need to acquire the multidisciplinary capabilities and habits of thought necessary to address such questions.
