Introduction to the Research Handbook on Leadership in Healthcare

Naomi Chambers

Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Leadership in Healthcare, 2023, pp 1-7 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This opening chapter explains the approach taken in the development of this handbook, the general principles guiding the authors, and the book structure. Each of the 40 chapters stands alone as an original piece of work. Throughout, the authors illuminate the struggle to tackle the tests for healthcare leaders and the sticky question of persistent variation in the quality of healthcare leadership. Leaders in healthcare face an almost perfect storm of complex challenges. These are common across the world although experienced differently. New for this decade is the need to meet the challenge of net zero omissions, handle the ravages brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, and absorb the economic consequences of supply chain shortages wrought by military conflict in Ukraine. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that great leadership does make a positive difference to patient experience and the cost-effectiveness of care. This introduction outlines how this handbook contributes to the important debate of improving healthcare leadership.
