The value proposition for nursing in the NHS – enabling a shift from cost pressure to public value

Elaine Maxwell and Abigail Masterson

Chapter 24 in Research Handbook on Leadership in Healthcare, 2023, pp 439-456 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we make the case for establishing a value proposition for nursing. We demonstrate how such a shift would help increase the sophistication of public policy discussions that currently become mired in cost rather than value. It would also help to bring together what are currently disparate narratives on nursing where it is seen either as a profession in its own right making a unique contribution to health and care or alternatively as merely a useful adjunct to the medical profession. Through our attempts to develop a value proposition for nursing we expose the need for further research and theorising that illuminates the contribution of professional nursing to improving better health outcomes for client groups such as people with mental health issues and people with learning disabilities.
