Chapter 27 in Research Handbook on Leadership in Healthcare, 2023, pp 508-523 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the contribution of leadership in the development of a primary care service in Catalonia. It starts by describing how primary health care is organized across the region and then delves into the management structure focusing on the individual manager roles, the relations between doctors and nurses and their interplay with other levels of care and the community at large. The experience of Castelldefels Agents de Salut (CASAP), a primary care public consortium founded in 2005 in Castelldefels (an urban town south of Barcelona) is offered as an example. CASAP runs a Primary Care Team (PCT) and an Emergency Primary Care Team (EPCT). CASAP achieves good clinical results in chronic care and health promotion and improved accessibility through collective leadership based on team building.
