The Nursing Now Campaign: global evidence for advancing the status and profile of nurses in healthcare leadership

Abstract: Nurses constitute the largest proportion of the global health workforce and are found in every area of health care, yet they struggle to influence health policies at a national level. It has been said that nursing is stuck in a rut and is unable to change the status and influence of the profession. The Nursing Now campaign (2018-2021) aimed to raise the status and profile of nurses globally and this chapter will explore how the campaign evolved and the iterative processes by which nurses both shaped the development of the campaign and were also influenced by the campaign to become more visible and powerful advocates for the nursing profession. The campaign created – temporarily - a new global solidarity among nurses, allowing greater interchange of partnerships, ideas and mutual support. The lessons learned from the campaign for the longer-term development of leadership in the nursing profession are presented.
