From paternalism to mutualism Eco-Leadership: the cultural transformation of healthcare
Simon Western
Chapter 41 in Research Handbook on Leadership in Healthcare, 2023, pp 793-817 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter claims that we need to change the very coordinates around how we think, perceive, and emotionally feel about healthcare. It offers an initial analysis of the main ethoses that have underpinned healthcare delivery over time, using the British NHS as an exemplar: Phase 1. 1948-1980s with a Caring-Dependency ethos of ‘doctor knows best’. Phase 2. 1980-2020 with a Market Efficiency ethos of ‘the market knows best’. Each ethos traps us into a way of thinking and being that limits possible change options. The chapter then develops a new ethos of a Mutualist-Ecosystem and offers guidance as to how to deliver this by utilising Eco-Leadership approaches. It ends with a call to action for eco-mutualist healthcare and social well-being: a manifesto to re-enchant healthcare and social well-being systems
