Abstract:
The chapter describes the key principles of extracting energy from the wind. Extracting wind energy implies a reduced downstream wind velocity, a wake. The main components of a state of art horizontal axis wind turbine are described, this includes components of the Rotor-Nacelle-Assembly, RNA, the support structure carrying the RNA, as well as critical issues related to the control system. The fundamental difference between onshore and offshore wind turbines is the presence of water. The support structure must continue from the bottom of the tower and into the sea. Characteristics of various concepts for bottom fixed as well as floating wind turbines are discussed. The layout and size of present and planned offshore wind farms are discussed. Challenges related to wake effects and density of wind turbines within a wind farm are addressed.
