Three windows on humanity: development, corruption and environmental performance
.
Chapter 2 in Ranking Nations, 2023, pp 26-64 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
There have been many attempts to assess the performance of countries using indices, and these include the spheres of human development, corruption and the environment. This chapter provides background to the three examples of indices and their associated league table-style of ranking of countries. The examples selected are the Human Development Index (HDI), Corruption Perception Index (CPI) and Environmental Performance Index (EPI). All three have been around for some time, the HDI since 1990, the CPI since 1995 and the EPI since 2006, and are widely reported in the media each time (annually for the HDI and CPI and biannually for the EPI) a new set of rankings is published. The chapter also provides an introduction to the methodology behind the three indices and discusses how the rankings of countries based on the indices may be related.
