The OECD in the ecosystem of international organization

Chapter 8 in The Elgar Companion to the OECD, 2023, pp 95-104 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The OECD is deeply involved in what it calls ‘international rule making’ with other international organizations. Since the OECD’s establishment, the ecosystem of international organization has evolved to include more diverse types of international organization. These are sometimes composed of private actors in multi-stakeholder initiatives or others that are much more informal operating without a treaty and formal secretariat. In the main, the character of the OECD’s engagements with international organizations is ‘transgovernmental’. That is, international policy coordination innovations of the OECD are more usually jointly instigated with traditional treaty based intergovernmental organizations like itself as reflected in the constitution and organizing principles of the International Organization Partnership which the OECD convenes.
