Repatriating back home: implications of local and global value chains on backshoring readiness

Abstract: Theorizing on internationalization regarding questions of how and why firms enter foreign markets has been at the core of international business for decades. Thus, it is highly relevant to also improve the knowledge on exit and repatriation strategies as (multinational) firms increase their number and frequency of relocations, seemingly moving away from global value chains. Extending the literature on repatriation, this chapter contributes with insights on a relatively under-explored phenomenon of backshoring. More precisely, it explores the implications of local- and global value chains on backshoring readiness. In so doing, the chapter also touches upon the operational dimension along global value chains, which has received limited attention in the extant literature. Based on the contingency logic, the effects of local and global value chains are conceptualized for small and medium-size enterprises and large firms.
