Cross-cultural impacts in the domestic workplace: multicultural work environment, cultural intelligence, and extra-role performance

Abstract: Cultural diversity and multicultural characteristics of workplaces in the United States continue to grow in importance. Using a sample from a broad range of industries consisting exclusively of U.S. citizens, this study examines the potential relationships, including necessary condition relationships, involving extra-role job performance, workforce cultural environments, interpersonal motivation, co-worker daily interactions, and cultural intelligence, as well as several control variables. The results suggest cultural intelligence and interpersonal motivation are necessary conditions for extra-role job performance. The degree of daily interaction with work colleagues was also found to significantly impact extra-role performance, although this was not found to be a necessary condition. In addition, it was also found that a multicultural work environment and interpersonal motivation are necessary conditions for employees’ cultural intelligence. Potential implications, future research, and limitations of results are discussed.
