Cultural intelligence and global citizenship: conceptualizing and establishing interrelationships

Alfred Presbitero

Chapter 24 in Handbook of Cultural Intelligence Research, 2023, pp 397-411 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Cultural intelligence (CQ) has emerged in the literature as an important individual-level capability for effective cross-cultural functioning. However, studies on CQ have so far been limited to individuals navigating the national/country level of culture and there have been no attempts to examine it in the context of global culture. Hence, in this chapter, we extend the boundaries of CQ and assert how it can be an important individual capability, considering global culture specifically. We also stretch the conceptualization of CQ and establish how overall CQ and its dimensions can relate to global citizenship (GC) - an individual’s identification with the global community and its culture. Through these, we are able to advance our understanding of CQ and establish how it can be valuable in navigating global culture and instrumental in addressing critical issues in the global community. Last, we offer recommendations for the future of research on CQ and GC.
