What role for the EU? Domestic contestation of the EU's global role(s) in its neighbourhood

Abstract: With growing contestation in contemporary international relations scholarly attention focuses also on domestic context from which a foreign policy emerges. One of the main questions that draws attention is which areas of foreign policy are contested and what are consequences for EU's foreign policy? The main objective of a chapter is to discuss the phenomenon of domestic contestation of EU's external activities covering such aspects of EU's activities as security, democratization (and human rights), trade and development in the EU's neighbouring regions. In order to focus the attention to these elements I used a role theory and in particular domestic role contestation. Empirically the paper will analyse and compare contestation of relations with neighbours in the European Parliament between 2004-2019. Theoretically it will contribute to the discussion on drivers of contestation on domestic level in the foreign policy as well as what are putative effects of contestation on EU's actorness in international relations.
