Abstract: This chapter focuses on historical institutionalism in health care research. First, it reviews some of the main approaches and tools of historical institutionalism such as policy feedback and path dependency; critical junctures; and gradual institutional change. Then, it presents a selection of studies of historical institutionalism in health care in order to indicate the variety of approaches and tools in the historical institutionalism toolbox.
