Openness and new development perspectives

Abdelhamid Benhmade

Chapter 12 in Handbook of Innovation & Appropriate Technologies for International Development, 2022, pp 168-186 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the era of the digital revolution, openness is a new avenue to explore for new perspectives of development, among others, open development. While the challenges of inclusive and sustainable economic development require rethinking our theories and practices of development, open production, open distribution and open consumption of knowledge resources could improve the conditions of human life. To contribute to this exciting debate, this chapter aims to discuss not only the historical and semantic origins of openness, but also to present its schools of thought since the appearance of the first school known as Open Government in the 1950s.
