The rise of emerging economies: implications on appropriate technology development in theory and practice

Philippe Régnier and Pascal Wild

Chapter 4 in Handbook of Innovation & Appropriate Technologies for International Development, 2022, pp 47-53 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The concept of appropriate technologies, originally developed in Schumacher's book Small is Beautiful, grew out as a reaction to the energy crisis in the 1970s. Despite being originally developed for environmental and sustainability issues, it has become multifaced by the turn of the 21st century and found its application in emerging economies. This chapter discusses the appearances and use of appropriate technologies over time and in view of the various applications for emerging economies
