Technology evaluation for global development: exploring the efficiency of comparative methods

Daniel Frey and Bish Sanyal

Chapter 7 in Handbook of Innovation & Appropriate Technologies for International Development, 2022, pp 87-102 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The Comprehensive Initiative on Technology Evaluation (CITE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was created to provide more complete and objective comparative evaluations of products intended to address the challenges faced by people living in poverty. CITE adapted the assessment methods used by Consumers Reports in order to reduce the overall costs and duration needed to create a comparative evaluation report while still ensuring sufficient accuracy, repeatability, and completeness. This chapter describes the general principles underlying the evaluation methodology including laboratory and field-based tests. Then, for illustration, the chapter reviews the specific evaluation approach as applied by CITE to solar lanterns and evaporative cooling devices for storing vegetables
