Abstract:
Participatory design is a family of design approaches that actively involves people who face real-world challenges in the process of developing real-world solutions. This chapter focuses on three distinct approaches to participatory design that are practiced by MIT D-Lab and Lehigh's Global, Lehigh Valley, and Campus Social Impact Fellowship programs. Differentiated by when and how the user is engaged, those approaches are: user-centered design, co-design, and user-generated design. This chapter introduces each type of participatory design by providing practice-oriented illustrations from recent projects being implemented with diverse global collaborators. It also identifies key questions that arise during participatory design processes in low-income settings and suggests how to address those questions.
