Chapter 10 in Handbook of Mixed Methods Research in Business and Management, 2023, pp 141-162 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter reviews a sample of mixed methods research (MMR) studies published in five project management journals between 2016 to 2021 and reviews how the use of MMR has progressed in the project management (PM) field compared with a review completed in 2014 by one of the authors. Our analysis of identified MMR articles shows that the reporting of mixed methods research has improved. We also noticed that some of the studies sampled have integrated new combinations of qualitative and quantitative methods to study complex phenomenon arising in projects. In addition, we provide two case studies of MMR applied to complex project management research projects. The chapter concludes with some recommendations to further improve reporting of mixed methods research in project management journals to include the philosophical underpinning the use of the methods as well explaining the use of the typologies across different phases of their research.
