Promoting mixed methods research in sport management

Abstract: The history of sport dates back to before the first Olympic Games in 776 BC, yet sport management is still considered in its infancy by certain academies of management. As such, sport management scholars gravitate toward more traditional quantitative and qualitative research methodologies in an endeavour to gain publication recognition. Mixed methods research is not promoted as a preferred methodology in sport management for reasons investigated in this chapter. The perceived limitations and debate surrounding the validity of mixed methods in sport management are revealed together with strategies to counter this discourse. Through examination of peer reviewed seminal and contemporary sport management literature, results reveal how mixed methods are, in fact, being successfully applied in sport management in order to understand and develop this unique field of knowledge, which contributes, on many levels, to the overall wellbeing of global humanity.
