Chapter 13 in Handbook of Mixed Methods Research in Business and Management, 2023, pp 194-206 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Growing stakeholder demands for organisations to integrate environmental and social considerations into their business models is driving a new wave of sustainable business. This chapter shows how mixed methods research (MMR) may offer possibilities for capturing the complexities and holistic nature associated with sustainability phenomena. In particular, this chapter presents case studies supporting the argument that MMR can provide a comprehensive and practically orientated way that offers greater utility to sustainable business research (SBR) investigations. This recognises a pluralistic approach that brings different philosophical and methodological approaches together to form a transdisciplinary framework, aimed to provide a problem-solving process for researchers engaging in the diverse, complex and multidisciplinary nature of sustainability. The chapter concludes with its impact on theory and practice, proposals for further cooperation between academia and public policy actors and considerations for training and development.
