Mixed methods studies in design practice and suggestions for business and management research

Abstract: Interdisciplinary research has led to innovations in many fields. The wide acceptance of Design Thinking is one example from the field of design studies. Insights from other disciplines may enrich the interpretation and application of mixed methods research (MMR) in business and management. The objective of this MMR prevalence study is to (a) determine how frequently design researchers used MMR in the journal Design Studies (2014-2020), (b) what was the mix of these methods, and (c) the most frequently used methods and their combinations. MMR was the second most frequently applied research design employed as compared with qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The three-method MMR mix was the most frequently used, with experiments/quasi-experimental, case studies and semi-structured interviews the most regularly used data collection combination. Protocol analysis, which quantitizies qualitative data, emerged as a popular approach and should be considered a valuable tool as part of business and management MMR and the development of practice-based theory.
