Abstract:
Mixed methods research (MMR) is being utilized in more fields due to its ability to account for complex phenomena. Qualitatively oriented mixed methods research (QMMR) addresses this need by focusing on participants’ perspectives and local contexts. The purpose of this chapter is to support the use of QMMR in business and management. After providing a conceptual framework for how we define mixed methods, qualitative, and QMMR, we discuss examples from top tier business and management journals across several mixed methods designs: convergent (QUAL+quan), embedded (QUAL(quan)), sequential exploratory (QUAL→quan), and sequential explanatory (quan→QUAL) designs. We conclude with recommendations for researchers using this approach: base their work in theoretical frameworks relevant to their research; explicitly state their mixed methods design, rationale for using mixed methods, and their qualitative priority; and respond to quantitatively oriented critiques and limitations with the strengths that qualitative approaches offer.
