Religion as ideational basis: reflections on religion as source of legitimacy and basis of accountability, exercise of responsibility, and power in (politics and) public administration
.
Chapter 7 in Religion and Public Administration, 2023, pp 187-205 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 7 focuses on religion as a source of value-laden, normatively charged doctrines that shape the broader configuration of public governance and the administrative system. The ideational influence of religion historically had, and continues to have, a significant influence on profiles of legitimacy of public institutions and public organisations, their accountability to the public, the ways in which responsibility in the performance of public tasks is wielded, and, last but not least, on political (and therefore also administrative) power dynamics. This topic - referred to as the macro-level theme - is the final theme of the ten themes into which the study of the influence of religion on PA is developed throughout this book.
