Jo Blanden, Jani Erola, Elina Kilpi-Jakonen and Lindsey Macmillan

Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Intergenerational Inequality, 2024, pp 1-11 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This introductory chapter provides an overview of how research on intergenerational inequalities has developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing on its origins in Sociology and Economics. It presents some of the key concepts in the study of intergenerational inequalities, such as absolute and relative mobility as well as equality of opportunity. The chapter reviews some of the main topics covered by the multidisciplinary research literature, thus setting the scene for the chapters of the Handbook. The chapter concludes with a discussion on developments that have brought the different fields together as well as the factors that continue to keep them apart. We also predict future trends in the multidisciplinary research agenda on intergenerational inequalities.
