What do we know about the intergenerational transmission of health

Bhashkar Mazumder

Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Intergenerational Inequality, 2024, pp 150-163 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Social science researchers have increasingly begun to explore the intergenerational transmission of health as health is recognized to be a key component of overall welfare. This chapter reviews the current state of the literature on intergenerational health mobility. Until more recently, much of the research on the topic has focused on intergenerational correlations in longevity and other anthropometric measures that have been readily available in data. More recent studies have begun to conceive of health more broadly using measures of self-reported health available in surveys or by making use of large-scale administrative datasets with many potential health outcomes. Overall, studies tend to show a low degree of intergenerational associations in health with correlations that range from 0.1 to 0.3 depending on the outcome and the population of interest. This finding suggests that there is a much greater degree of intergenerational mobility in health than in other dimensions of socioeconomic status.
