Intergenerational mobility and race

Abstract: The chapter reviews the literature on race and intergenerational mobility. Most studies presented are about the US case because the subject has mostly been investigated there. The development of research in sociology, economics, and demography since the late 1960s is presented. The focus of the review is on empirical quantitative studies and not on theories about racial inequality. Nevertheless, the conceptualization of race and issues of fluidity and variability in racial classification are also presented, since they pose important challenges to the literature on race and intergenerational mobility. The constructive idea that race is not fixed over the life course, a long history, and across countries and regions is discussed. The relevant literature about Latin American cases - in particular, Brazil and Mexico - is also presented to illustrate differences in the conceptualization of race and its consequences on intergenerational mobility research.
