Commentary on contextual and demographic dimensions of intergenerational inequalities

Tuomas Pekkarinen

Chapter 22 in Research Handbook on Intergenerational Inequality, 2024, pp 286-290 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This commentary chapter discusses the seven chapters dealing with the variation of intergenerational mobility across space and time and the social mobility of different socio-demographic groups. It highlights what this kind of research can tell us about the mechanisms influencing social mobility rates and the opportunities for policy to intervene. In particular, it discusses the structural factors that can influence differences across countries, variation within countries as well as change over time. Finally, it considers some of the reasons behind, but also drawbacks of, the predominant focus on white majority populations and father-son mobility.
