Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Nonprofit Accounting, 2023, pp 214-230 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter outlines a series of key accounting-related research questions on the impact of nonprofit regulation and monitoring, presents what we know about the answers to those questions, and lays out where future research could help bridge the gap between what we know and what we do not. Our discussion is organized around four areas: (1) federal and state government regulation, (2) non-regulatory monitoring, (3) international research, and (4) salient research opportunities and emerging and untapped areas of inquiry. We highlight the most interesting and fruitful ways to address gaps in our knowledge through future research along with research possibilities in emerging and untapped areas of interest.
