Abstract:
Measuring the performance of nonprofit organizations can be tricky as there is no universal measure of success. Rather, performance is uniquely measured according to an organization's mission, model, and cause area. The US nonprofit sector contains over 1.8 million entities of widely varying sizes and types. To aid researchers, regulators, and other interested parties, we offer a review of the literature on the multiple definitions of nonprofit performance, including nonfinancial and financial measures of success. We define the nonprofit performance metrics proposed in prior literature and describe what research has found to be associated with these metrics. We also suggest areas for additional research and thought.
