Managers’ channels of communication

Dawn A. Matsumoto and Gregory S. Miller

Chapter 9 in Handbook on the Financial Reporting Environment, 2025, pp 157-178 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Effective stakeholder communication is essential for a company's success, requiring careful consideration of both what information to disclose as well as how to effectively communicate that information. In this chapter, we discuss some of the most common communication channels at a manager's disposal: corporate websites, press releases, social media, conference calls, and in-person meetings. In determining the appropriate channel for their message, managers need to consider the nature of the information, the target audience, and their objective. We discuss how channels differ on a number of dimensions – including the degree of interactivity, ease of accessibility, breadth of reach, C-suite involvement, and the physical setting – and how determining the appropriate channel can be as important as the information itself. Yet, as with all disclosure decisions, this decision is as much art as it is science.
