Chapter 21 in Research Handbook on Feminist Political Thought, 2024, pp 437-447 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Reaching back to at least the early 20th century, Iran has been the site of some of the most dynamic feminist movements in the region and globally. In this chapter, I examine the significance of Iran’s latest Woman, Life, Freedom uprising in relation to feminist movements of Iran’s recent past. I explore how the current uprising draws from and connects to this history, while forging new feminist visions and practices of social transformation. I argue that the Woman, Life, Freedom movement is inspiring transnational connections to feminist movements around the world that are simultaneously anti-authoritarian and anti-imperialist, and that whatever short, medium, or long-term transformations emerge from this uprising, the terrain of politics and the political imagination has forever shifted.
