Abstract:
The objective of this study is to examine the impact of the global spread of the Covid-19 pandemic on the urban settlements of Bangladesh. Data were collected from a total of 484 households in this study from Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The cost of basic needs approach was applied to estimate household poverty. A logistic regression model was used to identify the main factors that influence households’ poverty. The results showed that when the head of the household is affected by Covid-19 they suffer more financial distress and poverty. In addition, when a large number of members in the household were suffering from Covid-19, the probability of the household being poor increased. Moreover, households who did not have access to healthcare were poorer than families who had access to healthcare. Finally, urban households were poorer than rural households. These findings suggest that inadequate health services exist in Bangladesh's urban slums.
