Chapter 17 in Handbook on Innovation, Society and the Environment, 2023, pp 281-308 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Bioeconomy and circular economy are presented today as alternatives to the current production and consumption model that basically depends on hydrocarbons, with consequent environmental damage. Both strategies represent a possibility for the transition towards a new paradigm in all aspects of society. This chapter aims to identify the Latin American countries with the greatest potential for bioeconomy and circular economy. The methodology used is cluster analysis to identify Latin American countries with the best characteristics for circular economy and bioeconomy. Subsequently, the official documents of some countries in the region are analyzed using text mining. At the first level of analysis, the results show five countries with the best results for bioeconomy and circular economy, grouped into three clusters. The second level of analysis indicates the tendency to legislate on the issue of waste and bioproducts generated, which is more linked to the circular economy.
