Politics: false religion and fragility of real religious freedom

.

Chapter 7 in Law and Politics of Religious Fraud Regulation, 2023, pp 196-234 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter utilizes the rational choice perspective to examine the political dynamics of religious fraud regulation in these jurisdictions. This chapter sets out the rational choice theoretical framework and identifies the causative factors that drives the religious fraud regulations: maintaining political and ideological control; societal distaste of deviant religious practices. This chapter analyses the extent to which various constraints (i.e., legal, numbers, right activists, external) moderate the eventual manifestations. This chapter highlights the contributions to the understanding of religious fraud regulation both specifically vis-à-vis the three jurisdictions and as a general matter. The chapter addresses the two broader implications: political complications arising from the illiberal colonial alteration of the religious market and the complicity of liberal democratic proponents in democratic backsliding.
