Child poverty, adolescents’ aspirations, and social change

Cornelia C. Walther

Chapter 10 in Handbook on Child Poverty and Inequality, 2025, pp 159-177 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Overcoming (child) poverty means that those who are affected by it must be involved in solutions. Conscious participation in social change can unleash meaning in action. The POZE paradigm, which the chapter is based on, enables adolescents to influence their community, which is central to subjective well-being and collective prosperity. To discover and nurture their own aspirations, adolescents must evolve in an environment that offers them space for discovery and inspiring role models. Participation with the conscious intention of enabling adolescents to contribute to decisions that impact their life and that of others is essential for a life filled with purpose, which in turn is central to a world free from (child) poverty. Individuals who identify and pursue the purpose of their life early on gradually unfold and share their skills and qualities. The chapter offers an approach to nurture a purpose-driven mindset in adolescents and their potential role models.
