Macroeconomics and children

Giovanni Andrea Cornia

Chapter 12 in Handbook on Child Poverty and Inequality, 2025, pp 197-212 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Section 1 of this chapter briefly discusses the evolution of macroeconomic theory, from its early days in the 1930s to the three decades of dominant austerity, up to the present time in which such policies have become more sensitive to their social and environmental impact. Section 2, in turn, discusses the economic and social variables whose deterioration – due to macroeconomic factors or otherwise – could trigger a worsening in child well-being. As a continuation of the previous section, Sections 3 and 4 illustrate in greater detail the specific mechanisms and outcomes that affect the well-being of children in the fields of poverty, ill health, school performance, and family erosion. Finally, Section 5 offers an outline of the economic, social, and budgetary policies that ought to be introduced both before and after a macroeconomic crisis has erupted, with the purpose of protecting children during turbulent periods. Some concrete examples of such measures are presented at the end of this section.
