Chapter 28 in Handbook on Child Poverty and Inequality, 2025, pp 479-491 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter studies the intersection between quality of life and multidimensional poverty of children in five developing countries. We first review the framework and concept of quality of life as discussed in the social sciences literature. In the second section of the chapter, we discuss the several attempts at measuring quality of life in the global North, the key indicators included in those evaluative frameworks, and the framework we empirically employ in this chapter's analysis. We then provide a brief outline of child poverty measurement and how it could be incorporated in measuring children's quality of life. We use five developing countries in Latin America and West Africa as case studies. Finally, we conclude the chapter by discussing some key takeaways and exploring avenues for future research.
