Chapter 4 in Handbook on Child Poverty and Inequality, 2025, pp 72-87 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Child poverty is typically measured at the household level. But, irrespective of household resources, children may experience deprivations due to the geographical context in which they live. This study, within a specific context of isolated communities in Italy, seeks to understand how this specific local context affects children's well-being in the present and shapes their aspirations and plans for the future. The overall aim is to generate ideas, including from children themselves, of actions that could be taken to improve the lives of children growing up in such contexts. This chapter describes the rationale, aims, and methods of the study and reflects on emerging findings from the research with adolescents, which has highlighted the ways in which material and social conditions interacted to shape children's experiences.
