Chapter 3 in Research Handbook on Accounting and Information Systems, 2024, pp 35-49 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Enterprise Resource Planning Systems are employed for integrating organisational business processes through software, infrastructures, and digital platforms. These systems follow an accounting logic whereby accounting is integrated alongside many other business processes. Over the last decades, these systems have been revolutionising real-life organisations, and enhancing what has been called ‘business intelligence’. Nonetheless, accounting research has yet to completely catch-up with these systems. This chapter explains key research topics regarding ERP Systems. It describes their historical evolution and discusses their integration of accounting with other organisational business processes. In addition, it discusses the existing research on the success factors for implementing and managing these ERP systems. Furthermore, it explores transformations in ERP systems ensuing from recent Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technological developments, such as the cloud, machine learning (artificial intelligence), and the Internet of Things.
