Introduction: how to bring the silos together
.
Chapter 1 in Public Policy in Contentious Times, 2021, pp 1-9 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this first chapter, the basic elements in the polarization of the American public on major issues of policy at the level of the national government are identified. Six policy areas are highlighted that the administration of President Trump made into areas of contention: immigration, social benefits for lower income people, white supremacy, taxation and the budget, functioning of the democratic process, and promotion of political divisiveness. As individuals we are differentiated according to: urban or rural, age, education, income, and gender. In this book we will see what policies could be supported by individuals in these categories in six policy areas: drugs, alcohol and suicide; schooling; economic issues; infrastructure; environment; and urban and rural developments. The argument of this book is that there are many policies on which members of different categories can come to agreement. The key words are those that follow "contention" and "policy areas".
